About Us
Mathom House, a residential treatment center for juvenile sex offenders, began accepting clients in October 1987. Residents are typically higher functioning adolescent males between 13 and 18 at admission. They are primarily adjudicated on charges of voyeurism, exhibitionism, or child molestation with victims familiar to them. Other offenders who have committed aggressive, assaultive, or bizarre sexual offenses with strangers, or whose deviant sexual acts involve physical force or threat have also been accepted. These sexual contacts reflect the offender's borderline or inadequate personality development especially as related to self-esteem, anger, and power issues. Mathom House residents have usually been the victims of severe neglect at the hands of their primary caretakers and as a result have difficulty trusting adults. They do not however have histories of chronic criminal or institutional violence.
As many Juvenile Justice Systems attempt to "Balance" community protection with the needs of victims and rehabilitation of offenders effective treatment can be utilized as a technique to reduce recidivism and can represent significant long term savings over the continuing human and economic cost of ineffective treatment & prosecution.
